The ocean circulation is driven by a combination of winds and surface buoyancy fluxes. We run a number of experiments with varied surface forcings and look at the spatial variations in ocean circulation on short and long time-scales.

Heat flux variations in flux-forced simulation #32

We conduct a series of simulations with varied heat fluxes to evaluate the corresponding changes in ocean circulation.

A list of all the diagnostics can be found here: https://github.com/dhruvbhagtani/varying-surface-forcing/blob/main/Flux_vary_heat/Diagnostics.ipynb

The KE (and PE too) shows a positive trend with the addition of heat fluxes in the ocean, contradicting a popular belief that ocean circulation can only occur by a net input of energy from an external source.

PS: Please correct me if my above statement is wrong.

Finally, we have the ocean circulation in terms of the gyre and overturning. In general, both the gyres and overturning circulation show a positive trend. Screen Shot 2022-01-07 at 11 31 05 am
