ability to edit posts #2168

We need to be able to edit posts and/or comments. Many Spores are asking for this ability. For myself, I find using markdown to be very difficult and cannot seem to do it right. I have never used it before and really don't get it. I don't know anything about code, programming or anything else like that, so it has been a challenge trying to figure out how to use markdown. (an unsuccessful challenge so far).

There are also times when we want to fix a typo, correct information, or whatever. It is very annoying that we have to delete a post and then re-post.

we have been asking for this for a long time, and now Maxwell says we can't have it. Is this because what we want doesnt matter, or because the developers can't figure out how to do it?

@mostlysane: Because it could be abused in many ways.

Imagine sb asking "Do you like ice cream", everybody says yes and then the OP edits his post to "Do you like raping little girls?"

untitaker commented 13 years ago

Oh yeah, and it's pretty hard to implement too.

mostlysane commented 13 years ago

untitaker, you might want to read up on previous posts, since the issue of it being abused has been dealt with quite easily in several ways.. and if it's so hard to implement, why do you suppose there is not a single social platform or forum out there that doesnt have very easy ways to do it.. including diaspora's own forum? I have over 20 years of programming experience and have a pretty good idea of how hard something might be.

"untitaker, you might want to read up on previous posts, since the issue of it being abused has been dealt with quite easily in several ways.." Interesting. Links?

"and if it's so hard to implement, why do you suppose there is not a single social platform or forum out there that doesnt have very easy ways to do it.. including diaspora's own forum?" Because in decentralized networks, things are just harder to implement... though i also think that it is implementable.

Also, the labels on #1762 say that this feature will be implemented before they go beta... so i don't really know why to bother.

mostlysane commented 13 years ago

call me lazy, but somehow I just cant get too excited about doing your homework to dig up the links to teach you what youre talking about.. maybe because I just don't care about it that much, I only did this to back up a friend, not because I have any reason to believe that it will make any significant difference - as to why bother about fixing something that is one of the 2 most requested fixes for as long as i can remember, gee, i don't know. You will do better talking to one of the people who don't know when theyre being blown off :)

This issue should be closed as a duplicate of #1762. The comments could be copied over, if desired.

Yep, existing issue has been reopened and it's being discussed. Also references this issue, so this comments are reachable from there. Closing... follow up on #1762 :)
