My rogue character currently has a Savage bow of heavens and I would like to upgrade it, but this weapon is only available from Wirt at clvl 10 and Grisworld at 19-21, according to the Internet. Is there a way to temporarily downgrade my character's XP level, so I can buy this bow (either by directly hex-editing the save file or modifying the source code)? I'm asking here as somebody might have a knowledge about the save file structure/game internals. The trainers I have found deal with (original) Diablo.exe, but running the game through Wine on GNU/Linux drops a no CD/diabdat.mpq found error, no matter what I do (it might be a compatibility error from what I read). Thanks in advance.
Things I've tried so far, unsuccessfully:
looking for char's current XP level by converting it from decimal to hexadecimal
creating a new game, heading to the cathedral, making a savegame before and after killing a monster, then restarting a new game and saving it again (for savefile reduction) for both saves. Then I loaded them up in a MPQ editor, extracted their contents and checksum compared the resulting files. This ended in two different files in each savefile, one with 1+ and another with ~36 kB filesize, but the actual differences were too long and hard to understand, so I gave up.
