This is a good behavior if nothing is selected, but it would be nice if, when a patch of text is highlighted, to only apply markdown to that text.
I would like this because intermingling LaTeX and Markdown text does not turn out well currently (the _ and * in LaTeX really mess things up), and I like to write in Markdown over using the Ctrl+{B,I,U,K} shortcuts. Alternatively, having a "smarter" markdown applier that ignores LaTeX items would be good too (although much more tricky to implement).
