Hello,

After installing and trying to open the external tool from Power BI Desktop, I got this error. Would a portable version fix?

Thanks

Hello droofus, Thanks for reporting your issue. It seems the report you start with is a pbit. Do you confirm ? If yes, please save your report as a pbix and retry Otherwise, please describe the steps to help me to reproduce the issue

Hello and thanks for the quick response.

I can confirm I am opening a saved pbix file and not pbit.

My steps are pretty straight forward: Open pbix, Click on Power BI side tools from External Tools.

I am on a work laptop so while I can get admin rights to install, I am wondering if that is it.

Thanks for your reply I suppose you use Version 1.3.0 ? Which version of Windows do you run ? I am not sure it's a problem with admin rights. Can you try with another Pbix? Please choose a very simple one. Be sure your Pbix file extension is '.pbix' (lower case)
