make (render-gui) not segfault when gui unitialized. make (gui_render_loop) stoppable.

Thanks for this - I must confess I haven't used it for a while - and I'm not sure who else is depending on it at the moment. So if you think it's ready then I'm happy to push it up. Now, or wait a bit?
