Hi, Are you aware that somebody is selling a car rigging addon on Blendermarket based on your addon? (https://blendermarket.com/products/rig-in-5 ) I don't have time to read your License, but if you're not aware of this I can imagine this to not be allowed. At least it feels weird to me that somebody is making money by adding some code on the base of a free addon. Just wanted to let you know

Hi,

thank you for this information. No I was not aware of that.

As you may have noticed, I do not maintain rigacar for years and I know the base code is now broken for the latest versions of Blender.

Yes it could seem strange that someone can make money by selling some code based on a free addon. But the problem comes from blender market itself. Due to the licence of the blender API (GPL), all blender addons  must be under the GPL license which means free (like in freedom).

However GPL does not mean you cannot sell the code... especially if a platform is ok to sell it and people are ok to buy it. As long as blender market is mainly targeted hobbyists, it could be seen as a way to bring financial support to artists. But this model could be easily hijacked for GPL code based product. For instance, you can buy this addon for 18$ and then you can sell it for 19$ or even 10$ as long as you don't pretend to have written the code. So GPL code can be sold but this economic model is not sustainable because people can easily have legal access to the code if they really want to. Obviously, other products (like 3D models) are not following the same licensing model, but when you buy GPL code on blender market what you really do is a donation.

On this particular case, it seems clear that many improvements have been added to the original code. And the code has been updated to be compatible with the latest versions of Blender.  If you look at the video, the author explicitly says that his addon is based on rigacar. So it is distributed as a derivative code from rigacar which is exactly what is expected for GPL licensed code.

So you can consider you pay 18$ to support the developer for all the improvements he added to my code. My personal feeling is that it is overpriced but it is not illegal, not even unfair.

Thank you anyway for sharing this info.
