Inconsistent behaviour when submitting the same command using two different clients #5995

Using the code example from #5947 with n=10000, I get strangely inconsistent behaviour depending on whether I submit the command via JSON API or DAML Script.

To reproduce:

  1. Start Sandbox: daml sandbox --maxInboundMessageSize=41943040 --ledgerid=sandbox-e9aa5244-83e7-4892-960f-b7fb7deda245
  2. Upload dar: daml ledger upload-dar
  3. Start a JSON API to query: daml json-api --ledger-port=6865 --ledger-host=localhost --http-port=7575
  4. Run the script: daml script --dar .daml/dist/batch-0.0.1.dar --script-name Batch:t --ledger-host localhost --ledger-port 6865

As expected, it will fail with a RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED on the client side. We can now observe something unexpected. Even though the error occurred on the "return path", the transaction did not go through.

Now let's submit the same thing using a second JSON API:

As expected, this fails with a similar RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED. However, this time the transaction went through.

I think the number of exceptions are a red herring and stems from the daml script process being terminated but the daml json-api process continuing to run.

The real difference is that the daml script uses 2 transactions and the json api curl command uses a single create-and-exercise.

Found the reason why the response is empty when creating the transaction with daml script: The allocated party id is randomized, only the party display name is p. The party in the script should be allocated like 

p <- allocatePartyWithHint "p" (PartyIdHint "p")
