Pangeo is pretty far along with defining a set of software libraries for "big Earth-data analysis". It'd be useful to mention this as a model while talking about the differences/how it integrates with what we propose.
I think one of the distinctions is that Pangeo seeks to work towards "big data" geoscience while the DigitalCrust effort might need to tackle aspects more integrated with "broad data" (that term thanks to Julien Emile-Geay just now), i.e. data from many sources at varying levels of complexity, cleanliness, and underlying models.
