Not doing this was causing issues with areas not being merged correctly.

I don't think projecting to 4326 is going to work across the antimeridian

Good point, although I am testing on the anti-meridian... I think this will work without reprojecting, actually. I'll tweak it and test a bit.

Yeah I'm wondering if it just extends the bounds too far then? Like to the edge of the pathrow / s2 scene?
