Nearly similar patterns are those which differ only in one or two sounds. Often, these patterns correspond to sets which share the same proto-sound, but diverged later (palatalization, etc.). Quantitative pattern analysis should have a way to find these patterns.

The concept of "quasi-clique" should ring a bell here!
