Date and time format guide

The default date format is F j, Y which formats today's date as January 27, 2017. But there is no documentation anywhere how to get other formats, like 27 Jan 17 or 2017-01-27 etc. There is also no mention of any time format.

I'm willing to create a documentation as a PR if you can tell me the basic formatting rules (or show me what standard rule set you're following).
