Debian packaging support #83

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
As a Debian/Ubuntu user, I think MDAnalysis lacks Debian packaging support.
In order to correct that (and because I am working on a tool that depends on
MDAnalysis), I created some packages to make the installation "cleaner" on
Debian-like systems.
These packages are available here (they were built for Ubuntu 11.10 but should
work fine on Debian unstable):
https://launchpad.net/~seb-buch/+archive/sandbox
This is the PPA I use as a personal sandbox so the packages there are not meant
to be official.
These packages were created using the 0.7.4 release (MDAnalysis-0.7.4.tar.gz
and MDAnalysisTestData-0.7.4.tar.gz files).

I am not sure if you want if you want to add Debian packaging support but here
are attached two diff files to add this feature to MDAnalysis.
I used the trunk and the MDAnalysisTestData branches (rev 914 for both) for
creating them.
If you are not familiar with Debian packages but want to add support for them,
I may join the project to maintain them.

Hi Sebastién,

Debian support would be great. We'd like you to add it to MDAnalysis so we
enabled r/w access to the subversion repository for you (use your @gmail
address and see the http://code.google.com/p/mdanalysis/source/checkout
instructions). Please add your patches and close this issue when fixed. Also
add a line to CHANGELOG in your commit.

See http://code.google.com/p/mdanalysis/wiki/Source and
http://code.google.com/p/mdanalysis/wiki/DevelopmentWorkflow for a start; just
ask if you have questions.

Cheers and welcome aboard,
Naveen, Liz & Oliver

As mentioned here:
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianMentorsFaq#What.27s_wrong_with_upstream_shipping_a_
debian.2BAC8_directory.3F

Shipping a debian directory with source code is not recommended. This is why I
deleted the patches I previously attached.

I also changed the issue type from Defect to Enhancement since MDAnalysis is
perfectly installable without Debian packages.

Sébastien

Good news,
I created a PPA where you can get MDAnalysis. Here is the address:
https://launchpad.net/~seb-buch/+archive/mdanalysis

The PPA contains only MDAnalysis and GridDataFormats so it should be safe to
add it your software sources. To add the PPA, just run the following command:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:seb-buch/mdanalysis

This PPA should also be suitable for Debian users (either use it directly or
download packages from it).

Next step is to add MDAnalysis to official Debian and Ubuntu repos.

Great — do you want to post the previous information to the mailing list so
that more users will see it?

Can you add a similar note to the INSTALL file in the distribution (maybe after
the section on 'Easy Install' (which should probably be updated anyway...), a
comment to the CHANGELOG (along the lines that deb packages are also provided),
and add yourself to AUTHORS.

(I suppose we'll close the Issue once the packages are in an official repo?)

Cheers,
Oliver

I made the changes and posted some advertisement on the discussion group.
I hesitated before closing the issue but you are right, we should wait for the
official repos before closing it.

Hi Séb,

when you get a chance, could you build & post 0.7.5 debs?

Cheers,
Oliver
