Improve the global search PR to add a command bar #23

Just dropping it here for now. It is an extension of the global search extension in #22.

Since it is such a big change from the original one I thought I'd rather open this as a separate PR so things to get too mixed up. If we agree that this is the direction we want to go we can merge them together and go from there.
