found settings.xml.  stopped the user@localhost password message.  now media 
state file cannot be opened error message pops up.

I guess you did not run setup.sh 
setup.sh makes a few directorys inside the addon-data-directory.
Did you install the 2 debian packlages ? 
The settings are insde addon-manager.
Without a xbmc.log I could only set this entry to invalid
