Just wanted to say I love this idea and would totally vote to get this as the next project. I currently pay for Google Music, but would switch in a heartbeat to a service that could provide even half of the things you've mentioned here. 👍
i'm an electronic musician , basically have been wanting to start this same idea, less from the perspective of a social network / streaming variant but as a label owner. i would truncate, drop the fiat pay out options. let it be a streaming service that plays like soundcloud, pays like spotify (but uh... better), and allows people the option of buying downloads (all in crypto, dnt or otherwise) . people can share through sms already, bring in all the sms aspects later if its adopted. I'm not a programmer but thought i'd throw in my .00000000000000002 coin as an artist.
my opinions go on but if you don't care so much just what was stated above is the point...
the part that made soundcloud so great originally (from the artist perspective) was the simplicity , and the oddity , being able to explore and find weirdness- since it was open, without class structure or premium options, higher tier artists and label marketing & the like. once those came in, its just ate shit.
spotify is useless for most artists as it doesn't pay you nearly anything (cc: itunes, beatport, juno, bleep, you name it) unless you have heaps and heaps of plays which comes from either pre/early sms clout or you have to play along with the current influencer circle jerk culture.
bc is the last bastion of hope in that its seemingly pure other than their front page being a record store that doesn't sell records & their massive fees . and now they have premium options which mostly seem to cater to marketing your music for menial sales or to pitch to journalists who dictate the fate of your career and get to make money off talking about your work (and a lot of people will pay agencies to get that even in addition).
so... what i'm saying is... something simple, and new, beyond class structures & outside of the shit game of the music world would be rad. something beyond their rules
There are some great projects working in the blockchain music space. I wonder if there is a way to either integrate the projects or talk them into transitioning their service to a district. This is my current list of music related blockchain projects: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14CgeOo66bf9xwyyF5oRrGlzzXhP8dMRiTIioMxHq0S0/edit?usp=sharing
Keep in mind some of these are not really a blockchain music project but could be used as one.
Love this proposal BTW, you have my vote
Hey @mthilliard
I'm not sure if you're aware but we recently launched a new bounty to migrate your proposals to the actual District Registry: https://registry.district0x.io/
We're replacing the old voting app with the registry. Let me know if you need help but I would love to see you migrate this over so you can claim your DNT.
It does take a 10,000 DNT submit to submit your proposal but this gives you an extra 2000 you can stake in the registry beyond the deposit amount.
Hit me up on Telegram or Discord if you need help or have questions.

PS, please excuse the canned response. I am encouraging everyone here to start migrating so they can claim their 12000 DNT.
NAME
0x Radio
PURPOSE
0x Radio is a browser-based music streaming service and digital marketplace run by fans for artists.
Current streaming services hold a HUGE market, but are too difficult for artists to make a living from and don't generate the companies enough revenue to function efficiently. Through a decentralized system I believe that we can, as a community, support our favorite artists in a way that is mutually beneficial.
What do current streaming services provide?
Spotify provides a great service to customers through a cheap monthly subscription and access to a huge amount of content. I personally used Spotify premium for about a year and was happy with the service because it was user friendly, allowed me to play music remotely via my phone on speakers or my desktop, made it easy to find new artists with the related artist section, and has great (constantly updating) user-generated and official public playlists to explore genres. I stopped using the service because I did not listen to it as much as Soundcloud. Spotify succeeds for the user but lacks the support for artists and does not have a healthy revenue system (although better than most).
Although Spotify made it easy to find related artists, I found Souncloud's related track algorithms to be much better and I am SO happy that it plays artists with massively varying plays on their tracks. You can choose a song with 30,000 likes and the next related song could be one with 30 likes and then 3,000,000 likes. This is a great feature for artists that would have never gotten a play on Spotify. It's a great service with a wonderful user interface and shows great support for upcoming artists through its algorithm but it is hemorrhaging money and its paid subscription service is failing. I, like many, have never paid for the subscription because there are not enough incentives to merit paying for it but I use the free service daily because I enjoy the wide range of content (without having to dig deep) and there are virtually no ads. Something I don't like is that it has download options, but many times you have to go to an external site in order to download which is an inconvenience.
Bandcamp prides itself on how it supports its artists. That was really the inspiration for it, but I think we can improve upon its model. I go to Bandcamp when I want to download a track in high quality and want to support an artist by paying for it. That's really about it. You can download in several high quality file types, and it's a wonderful feature but I don't use Bandcamp at all (as wonderful as it is for the artist) because I only use it to pay for music I already know, not to find new music (because other places do it better). As for artists, Bandcamp makes it easier for artists to profit by making it very easy for the user to buy digital tracks or merch.
DESCRIPTION
So why would I choose 0x Radio over Spotify, Soundcloud, or Bandcamp?
The content of Spotify, the convenience of Soundcloud, and the artist-friendliness of Bandcamp. Content comes with time, but the others would attract artists and fans who are frustrated with current music streaming sites and applications. Hopefully we can create a district that acknowledges the failings of these platforms and builds upon their strengths. I would use 0x Radio regularly if it had the following features.
(Specific to being decentralized): Supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Dash, or DNT for purchases and donations Contains integrated exchange between USD/BTC/ETH/XRP/DASH and DNT at market value Community-voted features (Proposed by users and voted on by tokenholders) Low exchange and transaction fees for the user and artist (Bandcamp takes 15% for digital purchases and 10% on merch purchases) Instant transactions for digital and physical purchases (Bandcamp takes 24-48 hours and sometimes up to 14 days to process transactions and take their fees)
Features for consumers:
Free tier: ------Create private playlists ------Stream most songs in medium quality ------Custom user interface and profile ( I think it's really important that we give a template but allow users to create their own personalized experience) ------ZERO ADS, but promotion of artists (in a non-disruptive manner [in margins]) that have paid in DNT ------Streaming across multiple devices ------Share and sync with your friends to explore playlists or genres together with an integrated voice chat or compatibility with a market-ready application (probably Discord) ------Chat rooms for users within a band or genre's page to talk about favorite related bands or events (with an auxiliary module in place to auto-silence users that break community rules)
One time $10 purchase threshold (cumulative): ------Suggest new/updated features ------Create public playlists ------Upload and share your songs for streaming or purchase ------Can choose to modify personal account to accommodate artist options or create linked account(s) so artist and personal page(s) are separate and can be made public/private separately ------Custom profiles which would generally include sections for: Updates/Tours Biography Merch Bands they like Bands that inspired their sound ------Choose to sell digital media for free (asking for donations in top currencies), sell individual tracks or full albums, and add optional bonuses for specified purchases ------Paid per play in DNT ------Choose to disallow streaming on certain tracks to encourage full-album purchases ------Ability to self-promote on the website for a certain period of time, a certain size (up to a maximum), and the location on the page based on the amount spent (higher priority will go to artists that use DNT and that spend a larger amount)
Purchase album: ------Full access to several high-quality filetypes for download (really annoying having to go to a different site to download) ------Playable offline ------Possible bonuses and/or discount on merch (decided by artist) ------Publish written, audio, or video reviews of the product (Amazon does this well)
The incentive for tokenholders for this district would be a small fee (5%) added on to digital purchases including digital downloads, self-promotion by artists, and conversions between currencies (but not donations or merch), as well as direct control over community-proposed features.
This is quite an undertaking but I think there is really something to this. Let's bring crypto into the mainstream.

EDIT 10/26: Modify payment options, integrated conversion between currencies for ease of use, paid tier removed for simplicity/added $10 threshold to prevent spam and voting manipulation as well as to encourage use of the system (feels more like a reward for doing what you would do already, like getting cash back from a rewards card). Restricted payout to DNT (encourages use of DNT while still providing access to other options). Layout changes. Description.
