dMMA - Decentralized Mixed Arts League #270

dmma

Background:

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat sport that allows striking and grappling, both standing and on the ground, using techniques from other combat sports and martial arts. Professional mixed martial arts (MMA) is dominated by a few different independent organizations that create, host and promote events to a worldwide audience. The Ultimate Fighting Championship, the largest MMA promotion company, has transformed the sport into a global phenomenon. UFC is the premier organization of MMA where the best of the best fight. There’s also Bellator, M-1 (Russia), One FC (Asia), Rizin FF (Japan) and the now defunct DREAM and Pride FC (both International but based in Japan).

However, in recent months the UFC’s popularity and viewership have been declining. While the specific catalysts for the decline can be speculated and debated ad nauseam, common concerns are the absence of the sports true megastars (Conor McGregor, Jon Jones, Ronda Rousey), outlandish and childish behavior from the companies CEO Dana White, loss of importance of the traditional fighting ranking system, cherry picking fights - the sport is quickly turning into a circus act.

The current ranking system is comprised of forty media members from around the world who rank fighters subjectively. These rankings are collated into one list. Fighter popularity is heavily considered because it gets more eyes on the fight. More eyes means more views PPV or otherwise. This in turn means more profit for the company. This contentious and highly flawed system does not have any real bearing on most fights. Championship contenders are mostly picked by Dana White, the companies CEO - the commissioner with the golden gavel. Dana's penchant to be outspoken has drawn the ire of many purist fans demanding change.

Time for the fans to step in and fix this mess.

Purpose:

A decentralized Mixed Martial League that combines elements of a token curated registry (TCR), a novel ranking system, and a revenue distribution model that properly rewards fighters and fans alike. Introducing dMMA.

Description:

1.) The Fighter Registry - This TCR makes use of a deposit and challenge mechanism to allow token holders to maintain a whitelist of approved Fighters in a decentralized manner. At any time, holders can move to include or exclude fighters from the registry. While the criteria for selecting fighters will be up to the discretion of the token holders who maintain the list; it can be speculated factors such as current and past performance, popularity, compliance with banned substances (USADA), persona and more will all be taken into effect. Much like the UFC signs the best fighters to it's promotion, dMMA will act it the same manner.

2.) User-Governed Ranking System - A new ranking system will be proposed and voted on by the networks token holders. It can be speculated that factors such as current and past performance, skill demonstrated, skills executed in previous match, strength of opponent, quality of victory/loss, views/ratings, social media mentions/buzz will all carry weight in the vote. This new ranking system will be determined by the fans/holders, and will be transparent and publicly viewable (unlike the closed, insider heavy systems used today).

3.) New Revenue Distribution Models - Currently fighters are limited to the pay negotiated by their contract with incentives & bonuses for achieving various milestones. The majority of professional fighters are working class - with only the cream-of-the-crop fighters earning more significant wages. The parent company; however, is a multi-billion dollar organization. The dMMA proposes a new revenue distribution model that will be determined by the dMMA's token holders. To be determined is how the revenue is generated/collected, how much (and the mechanisms by which) compensation is distributed to fighters.

4.) Community Appointed Administrative Positions - Users can apply to be appointed to help execute specific tasks critical to the success of the dMMA. While these tasks are not fully understood, one could speculate tasks could be (but not limited to) partnership/sponsorship deals, securing broadcast and distribution, venue selection management, security, as well as a plethora of legal/HR/administrative duties that must be rendered. Users appointed to these tasks will be compensated with the funds held by the organization. More on this concept will be explored by the district0x team at a later date.

Closing Thoughts:

Fans/Holders Have Control. As demonstrated in prior points; the fans will have the ultimate control and influence over the ranking system and which fighters appear on which fight cards. This will ensure the biggest/best matchups will be created consistently. The goal is to a create an improved and democratic ranking system, comprised of the highest caliber fighters, putting out quality fight cards that ultimately draw the best fighters to the network with the highest upside potential. With the absence of a traditional centralized business entity, compensation and revenue can be more justly distributed and thus attract fighters from other promotions to apply for consideration to the dMMA.

This seems hard to pull off in the real world because of all the politics but I almost want this as a celebrity deathmatch TCR. We could make it into a rare collectible game or integrate ideas from proposal #189 (Suplex). May be a fun marketplace if using real-world likeness of people.

Going to do something a bit different with the spotlight soon, we may dive into #189 (Suplex) a bit more and see what it would take to merge ideas if I can get the creator to be active. I'll let you know if we do so you can watch.

Today's stream will be a dive into how I will curate the new spotlight article and taking feedback on the new process. I held off on doing too many until I had a better way to do them other than playing favorites, which is not ideal.

Sorry PJ testing one more thing out. I use your proposal as a test so I don't spam community members. 😆
