I have an affordable (~16EUR) and compact programmer I tested with my Arduino
Mega (1280): myAVR mySmartUSB light.
http://shop.myavr.com/index.php?sp=article.sp.php&artID=200006
It has a Silabs CP2102 USB-UART, lsusb:
Bus 006 Device 005: ID 10c4:ea60 Cygnal Integrated Products, Inc. CP210x
Composite Device
I attached a patch to make it work in the Arduino IDE. I tested it, by first
destroying my Arduino's bootloader, by flashing an all-zero bootloader into it.
After that USB upload was verified to be broken. Then I used the Arduino IDE to
upload a new bootloader using the mySmartUSB light programmer, which worked
wonderfully, after that USB upload worked once again.
