Thanks so much! I ended up exploring some similar changes, but wasn't sure of the best path to update the old nixpkgs revision:
I really appreciate this patch. Personally, I'm layering a few overlays, so I think I've been using a more recent nixpkgs version (and not the 20.09 base). I haven't had a solid understanding of the experience for new users in a while. We certainly should push the base revision forward.
This change looks great. Let's merge this, and we'll support any users who have issues post-upgrade.

nixos doesn't do LTS stable versions like Ubuntu so it's inappropriate to be using an old version as a base. With the update to 22.05 this flake stopped working. This fork bumps the internal nixpkgs version to 22.05 and makes necessary changes to the nix expressions for the update. Changes:
