migrate README to markdown #72

Hi, I am not sure if you want markdown or not. Just in case you like it: I migrated the README to markdown and enabled proper syntax highlighting.

I kinda prefer the README to be human readable, with the wiki used for online viewing. Once upon a time github would parse RDOC, it's a shame they don't let you pick the markup any more.
