Is there a way to disable the join/part event messages from appearing in the chat?

Not at the moment, but it shouldn't be too difficult to implement.

Done in f9543cf06bba89608c5628b9043c9ed2641ebb8a

Added a checkbox to the Display settings to "Hide join/part messages", defaults to false/unchecked.
