~~I'd advise not merging this quite yet. I'm investigating possible corruption I noticed in serial output. (possibly threading-related) Still yet to confirm if it's a bug in the output implementation or skogaby's hardware test display setup.~~

If it is indeed in the output, we might need to add some kind of synchronisation (likely just another mutex to keep things simple) to ensure writes don't overlap.

We confirmed that there's no corruption issue, I'm just using a cheap LED matrix with slight ghosting issues.
