Allow import of Google maps .kml files into MyTracks #916

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
I have just aquired MyTracks and have been investigating the opportunities for
sharing mountain bike rides. It seems I can save my rides to google maps
(great) and let friends see them (great) but they cannot then us the kml
download from googlemaps in MyTracks.
MyTracks currently only imports gpx. I have looked at kml/gpx converters but
they seem not to work as Google does not use standard kml format.

Please could someone create this functionality.
Thanks

so is there any way of making a path on google earth and importing into my
tracks

In my case some of the KML files saved from Google Earth do not convert
correctly when using the typical KML -> GPX tools. Please add KML import to My
Tracks.

I also need this feature.

I mean why is Google making an application like MyTracks which saves KML files,
if after that, you cannot use it in the application anymore?
I've recorded an unmarked route to a certain place, and now, I wish to use the
recorded KML file to go back there and I can't use it. Then, what's the point
of this MyTracks application after all?

The OP and follow up posts stated the KML -> GPX tools often do not work. This
includes gpsvisualizer. MyTracks should open KML files.

Hello again every one. Thanks for your comments and support.
My Tracks developers...where are you? do you read these posts? It's free ideas
for improving your product.
What's the point of having this forum if you don't read it? Is it just an
emotional outlet for your customers?
Well don't bother. I have a better outlet for my emotions - it's called
Everytrail.com

Is there anyone out there....

Will be fixed in the next version, version 2.0.4.

In the next version, one will be able to import kml files generated by My
Tracks.
However, being able to import any kml files is much more complicated, which is
something we won't be able to support.

I was able to convert a kml file exported from Google Earth on my Mac using:
http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input
To gpx format, save the converted text in to a file, copy it to my Android
/sdcard/mytracks/gpx folder and import it in to MyTracks just fine. I didn't
check any of the extra info on the web site.
I plan on using this for back country ski route finding on my phone like I used
to in the old handheld gps days. Thanks for saving me the trouble of keying in
lat/lon by hand in to my old Garmin!

Thanks for the kml to gpx converter. This is the only one that seems to work
with My Tracks.

I also used http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input to convert a Google
Earth file to GPX. I lost all my way points and ended up with 12 different maps
that exported into My Tracks. This was a combined map from several trips.

I understand version 2.0.4 will have the ability to import kml files from My
Tracks which will be helpful but can't you at least also support kml files from
Google Earth to import into My Tracks?

for the person "cotozan...@gmail.com"

thanks for sharing that link. I had to wipe out my Android but prior to doing
so I found the KML file in a TMP folder on the SDCard for MyTracks. I salvaged
and copied that file to an external SD. Found your web link above :
http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input and copied the KML file to my PC
then did the upload as required. After conversion I saved to the PC then moved
back over to the SdCard. Opened MyTracks app for Android and the import was
successful. Thanks so much for posting this..I tried renaming the KML, created
a gpx folder and placed it there..nothing worked except your above link..thank
you again

Hi, I use 2.0.4 My Tracks
I recorded a series of tracks using it, Uploaded them to Google drive and Maps.
I deleted a few of the maps as i had uploaded them.
I since then used my tracks again To upload the maps again in series to a new
Google Map titled for example "HOLIDAY"
I remembered that i had deleted a few and found them on Google Maps.
I downloaded the relevant missing track as a KML and dumped itinto the
/MyTracks/kml/ folder and selected the import option.

All was successful and 100% complete YET!!!!

No tracks appear in my 'My Tracks' List.

So my question is.
How do I: Take a recorded track having uploaded it to Google maps and then
reimport the saved KML file back to My tracks on either a new phone or the one
i deleted it from.
I would like to pick and choose what tracks appear in my 'My Tracks' list and
be able to organise them (ie delete some, and reimport some)

It is now excessively irritating because i deleted all my maps to clean up and
now cant reimport the Google Maps KML, of the tracks I recorded and uploaded in
the first place, or for that matter give someone a copy to use.

Please Help

i also love how after importing the gpx i get 20 new maps in my tracks and it
crashes when i try to delete them ONE AT A TIME..
oh yeah, and i too am using the 2.0.4..

"In the next version, one will be able to import kml files generated by My

something we won't be able to support."

why would kml files created by google maps itself not work, when mytracks is a
google app??

haha and this issue it considered 'fixed' and 'closed as of dec 20th'..
really? as i sit here with no kml's showing up in my mytracks list, but 50
fragmented maps from 2 attempted gpx imports, meanwhile it takes a minute to
delete one map at a time..

woo hoo progress

So, can someone please confirm that at this time (5/10/13), it is not possible
to import a jpg file (or custom kml) into Google Tracks. For testing, I need
to track movement of a GPS receiver over a geographic area to verify that we
covered all of the paths. But Google Maps does not contain information I need
(i.e., path identification), nor are their maps as up to date as we need them
to be. I have the jpg file but don't see how to get it into Tracks.

Also, can Google Tracks run on a Nexus 10 ?

Thanks!

The new My Tracks (2.0.5) does has an Import KML feature!! I imported 6 files
and it said "Success importing 6 files". Only problem: the files are NOWHERE.
Thanks again, Google.

MyTracks does not even import KMLs generated by Google Maps! And it says
"Success: Imported xx files from /MyTracks/kml". Hilarious again, Google.

I'd like to import to MyTracks a .kml path created on Google Eart... or import
a track that I downloaded from internet.

That would be very usefull for adventures!

I tried to do that but MyTracks don't recognize the .kml files, probally
because there is some differences on the files codes.

I used to to that with my Garim GPS Map60.

Another vote for this functionality! Google, what if you actually supported
some of your products instead of creating a deluge of half @$$ stuff thats so
close to actually being useful that it it just makes people angry? That would
be so cool.

On My Track version 2.0.5, directly importing kml files doesn't work.. (it
imports the file but will show nothing once you open it on my tracks).. So
here's how to do it:

Since the original file format of My Tracks is gpx, we will need to convert kml
first to gpx by going to this link:
http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert?convert_format=gpx
1. Set the "output format" to GPX
2. choose file
3. click convert
Click the link it generated

You will have a file named like this 20140603201010-95243-data.gpx (there is no
need to rename this as the original name of the kml file will be carried out
once it is loaded in My Tracks later) from once it's downloaded... Copy and
save this to your SD card /MyTracks/gpx (if you do not have a gpx folder,
create one)

And then open My Tracks... select option and then Import All... select "All GPX
from /MyTracks/gpx"

Once it is done importing, you can see the track with the original name from
your kml file.

I'm using v2.0.7 -
i) import all does not find mytracks folder on SD card, but find and (try to)
use the same folder on internal memory
ii) My tracks return an unspecified error trying to import file kml o gpx
generated from my tracks itself LOL!!!!

I have a Samsung Galaxy S. MyTracks older version worked fine except for
importing a .kml file from Google Earth. I upgraded to MyTracks vers. 2.0.8
yesterday to try and rectify that situation. This was a big mistake: The
newer version still doesn't import .kml files, nor can it import a MyTracks
created .gpx file converted from .kml without losing the waypoints. And more
importantly it cannot EVER find a GPS signal to record a new track- even after
turning on all possible location services and waiting for hours. This is true
when I'm outside in wide open places.

Can this be fixed or can I somehow get an older version back?

I have the solution, but in portuguese. The secret is how to choose the correct
convert options from http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input site. See
attached file.

MyTracks Version 2.0.9
Google Earth Version 7.1.2.2041

Scream "Hi Brazil" if it works :))
