two small edits for clarity

Two edits:

rename a variable so its purpose is significantly clearer (to me, anyway)
edit an error message to use the word "number" instead of the abbreviation "nbr" (twice)

I added a third change:

remove an unused argument for the _waitpid method which was always passed but never used

Yeah, that unused parameter in _waitpid was there to mimic the real waitpid, but more vestigial than useful. +1 on lopping it off.
