When you fetch with http authentication it says "try reentering your password"

Just to make clear: do you mean to say this is about the nature of the message shown, i.e., it should says something like "enter your password [for the first time, because I, Elegit, haven't seen it before]"?

(confirming this isn't a deeper functionality bug of some sort)

This is about the notification that pops up. It seems to me that just the username/password dialogue should pop up, with no notification, then if the password and/or username is incorrect, then there should be a notification asking the user to try again.
