Total noobie, but successfully installed crouton on 2 prior chromebooks
This is a more modern one Asus CX5400

I downloaded a fresh github link to installer
I installed the `crouton extension

Install went normally
Gnome took over a minute to open.
All clicks lagged up to 30 seconds
LibreOffice typing lagged up to 30+ seconds.

Powewrwashed
re-installed with same methods
same result

THANK YOU so much for all your work, and any help I can get on this install

have you installed the xorg target update chroot with sudo crouton -n xenial -t xorg -u

I just tried this and despite this the chroot is unusable. The GUI is very slow. I'm using LXDE. I have a Samsung Chromebook Pro m7 with 16GB RAM.

Sorry if my memory is not to be believed, but I remember using Debian and vividly remember Ubuntu Xenial was extremely slow for this. Gnome on Debian Bullseye ran fine on an Acer Chromebook C871 with the Intel Celeron 5205U
