DocBook Alternatives #3

I know, none of the other documentation and writing, word/text processing tools has the goals and, or aims similar to DocBook, but, I, for one, am of an opinion that we must be fair enough and update the Alternatives as close as possible.

Here are few, which too can fulfill or are doing better for the needs of various classes of users:

  1. LaTex
  2. Pollen
  3. GNU troff/nroff
  4. Creole
  5. Markdown
  6. Textile

In addition to above there are a lot of other Markup Languages, which are either implemented in various scripting languages or as plugins; renowned users of these, for example, are WordPress and GitBook etc.

Interesting is note is, Github uses gettalong/kramdown bloatware ;-)

Hmm, I would disagree that any of these are alternatives to DocBook.

LaTex is all about typesetting. Pollen is all about digital publishing. troff/nroff/groff are all typesetting mechanisms. Creole, Markdown, and Textile are simple presentation markups that focus solely on visual presentation.

None of these are semantic.

None of these are actual alternatives to DocBook, so I think the "Google it" suggestion that is currently there is fine.
