Small tweaks to fsteimke's PR to support xrefstyle #446

This PR is essentially a copy of the PR @fsteimke provided in #436. Thank you Frank!

  1. I undid some whitespace changes that were introduced by Frank's code editor. Mostly just to keep the diffs as small as possible.
  2. I tweaked the prose in the guide a little bit to fit in better with the rest of the editorial style.
