Hi signing on to say the same thing. My new MacBook Air with M1 chip is here and docker is not jiving!

OS: BIgSur 11.0.1

erin@air-in Docker % docker --version
Docker version 19.03.13, build 4484c46d9d erin@air-in Docker % docker run hello-world docker: Cannot connect to the Docker daemon at unix:///var/run/docker.sock. Is the docker daemon running?.

The Desktop App also gives the same error as the OP.

Have a look at the official statement

eriniocentric commented 3 years ago

Thanks! I did come across this in a google search. I focussed on this statement "We are also happy to let you know that the latest version of Docker Desktop runs on Big Sur" and saw other people making it work on Big Sur. But I understand it will take a bit of time to get it working on the new chips. I'll keep my old laptop around for docker stuff then. I nearly updated it to Big Sur but I'll keep it on Catalina just in case.

stephen-turner commented 3 years ago

Big Sur on Intel chips works fine, it's just the new chips that it doesn't yet work on.

jaytimbadia commented 3 years ago

Ok, So if later point in time apple M1 team make docker compatible with M1, will that be a software upgrade or do I need to buy new Macbook means it wont be supported in current releases of M1?

stephen-turner commented 3 years ago

It's us that need to fix it, not Apple, so we expect it to work on the current M1 chips.

As has been said in https://www.docker.com/blog/apple-silicon-m1-chips-and-docker/, you can sign up for the Docker newsletter to get updates. For now, we can only wait

Shouldn't this issue be left open until the problem is resolved, so that subscribers can be notified?

I understand that I can be notified by subscribing to your newsletter, but I don't want to sign up for a marketing email and sift through each one by hand when we have a perfectly good system - that we use for all other issues - right here.

neverbot commented 3 years ago

This issue should be reopened. It's still happening and it's easier to look for this info here than in a newsletter.

stephen-turner commented 3 years ago

We try and leave only bugs open. This is not a bug because it is explicitly outside the stated system requirements. Don't worry, when we do release it we will not be shy about publicising it.
