Docker Desktop 4.23.0 causes m1 to crash with Kernel Panic #6975

Description

I tried to install docker desktop version 4.23.0 and whenever I tried to launch it, it would crash before it even got to open. This is a snippet of the error log:

I reinstalled a few times and the same thing happened each time.

I installed 4.12.0 which worked just fine.

Reproduce

download + open docker application

Expected behavior

computer doesn't crash and the app opens

docker version

4.23.0

never even got to install so it didn't work

Hello there! Can you please give us a diagnostics following the troubleshoot guide?

If it's not possible from the UI, you also get the diagnostics from the terminal, see Diagnose from the terminal.

I've had exactly the same issue. Can't run the application without crashing the OS but ran the diagnostics

Same issue. 4.22.1 works fine.

Same here. 4.23.0 makes Mac with M1 chip crash and restart.

Thanks for the report. If the Mac kernel crashes, it's a bug in macOS rather than Docker since we have no kernel extensions. Could you update to the most recent version of macOS to see if it works better?

Then why does 4.22.1 work fine?

The trace for the panic on 4.23.0 includes this line:

Panicked task 0xfffffe1b3c700728: 38447 pages, 8 threads: pid 1343: qemu-system-aarc

I presume this is a truncation of qemu-system-aarch64, which is running under 4.22.1 without causing the same crash. The QEMU bundled with docker jumped from 5.2.0 to 8.0.2 in 4.23.0, so the incompatibility may stem from there.

I'm currently on Monterey 12.1, will be retesting on the 12.6.9 shortly.

I sent at least one bug report to Apple about this, though the transparency of that process isn't what it might be. I agree that it's technically the kernel at fault when userspace programs crash it, but that's cold comfort.

Works for me on Monterey 12.6.9

Notably qemu-system-aarch64 is not running in this case, prior to the OS upgrade it was running before any containers were started. Now it's not running even when an amd64 container is running.

We had this issue with a few engineers as well - they were running an older version of macOS <12.5.x. Upgrading them to the latest macOS release resolved the issue, so perhaps its related to the change to defaults with VirtioFS/Virtualization framework?

Got the same issue. Updating to a newer version of MacOS worked wonders.

This built sent earlier works around the macOS kernel panic. If it doesn't work for you, can you provide diagnostics? Note: gathering them takes longer if Docker Desktop is not running.

Was on M1 OS 12.0.1. Upgrading to 13.6 fixed the issue

Was on M1 OS 12.0.1. Upgrading to 13.6 fixed the issue

I've upgraded the OS to 13.6, and it is also fixed and started Docker Desktop 4.23.0 without crashing.

I tried this install and this was able to get me as far as being able to open Docker without it crashing my laptop. However, now whenever I open the app, it is stuck on "Docker Engine stopped". Is this to be expected or is there another issue?

This is the way.

I don`t use a localization framework in my case.

I upgraded to 12.7 and it works for me. However, now I'm dealing with a new issue where zsh kills some of the commands and doesn't execute. I'm currently trying to figure that out but I don't think it's related to docker

@Laotree I think you are hitting #6980 Please try the following workaround: Identify and remove the invalid path from the filesharingDirectories in settings.json. Ensure that there are no docker processes running, especially com.docker.backend, then start Docker Desktop again.

Tried 4.24.2 (for Ventura 13.6, on M2) - issue persists. Docker won't start (in Activity monitor it appears for a second and disappears).

Tried to create diagnostic ID, but process just getting kills.

Had the same problem with every version in range 4.27.0 - 4.28.0 (M3 Max, OS 14.3.1), 4.22.1 works fine.

Why is this marked as closed? I'm having the same issue with M1 Macbook Pro and cannot figure out how to downgrade to v4.22.1 so now cannot use Docker at all.

@paulyoung thank you for the response on this. I eventually found the same link and can confirm that 4.22.1 is stable for me with the M1 chip. The link to download this is no longer on the official release notes page though, so it's good that this is now on the thread.

I still don't understand why this issue is marked as 'Closed' though. It seems unresolved to me and it would be nice to receive an update from docker, once it is deemed 'safe to upgrade' for Apple M chip users.

The latest version of Docker is working on my M1, I just needed to update my MacOS from Moterey to Sonoma
