Docker desktop for Windows failing on startup #14001

Open e-kuri opened 5 months ago

e-kuri commented 5 months ago

Description

I have been trying to run Docker desktop on Windows Server 2025. It starts successfully, but when I try to switch to Windows containers, it fails with the following errors:

"Containers feature disabled. Enable it by using PowerShell script"

or

"Request failed and retry attempts exhausted. Post "http://ipc/windowsfeatures/check": open \.\pipe\dockerBackendV2: The system cannot find the file specified"

Reproduce

  1. Install docker desktop
  2. Run docker desktop
  3. Right click on docker icon in system tray and select "switch to windows containers"
  4. Docker startup fails with the following message: "Containers feature disabled. Enable it by using PowerShell script".
  5. Run the following command in a powershell admin prompt: "Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName $("Microsoft-Hyper-V", "Containers") -All"
  6. Restart server
  7. Docker fails to start with the following message: "Request failed and retry attempts exhausted. Post "http://ipc/windowsfeatures/check": open \.\pipe\dockerBackendV2: The system cannot find the file specified".

Other thing I've tried:

  1. Disable hyper-v: "Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -FeatureName microsoft-hyper-v -online"
  2. restart computer
  3. Enable hyper-v: "Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName $("Microsoft-Hyper-V", "Containers") -All"
  4. restart computer
  5. Docker still fails with same error.
  6. Reset to factory defaults
  7. Docker still fails
  8. Uninstall docker desktop and reinstall it
  9. Docker still fails

Expected behavior

Docker desktop should start

Go to the windows search bar, type Services, and see if your Docker Desktop Service is running, if not, right click on it, and launch it, worked for me. Set it to automatic tho.

Starting the Docker Desktop Service worked for me also!
