Steps to reproduce the behavior

  1. install Docker CE for windows
  2. encounter error
  3. reset to factory defaults
  4. encounter error again...

+1. You do not have to do any thing special to recreate this problem. Just install Docker CE from Docker site on Windows and follow the prompts. It restarts first, then tries to start, displays a message : "Docker needs Windows container enabled" attempts that, restarts again and fails with the MobyLinuxVM message.

From what I see, this problem has been posted in so many forums. I see a variant to this issue like in this thread where Docker was working fine on Windows and then all of a sudden wouldn't start one fine day . The solutions are all over the place and works for a few but very inconsistently.

May be there should be a big red warning on Docker Download site that "You are attempting to install Docker on Windows. Docker might not get installed properly on Windows very well and therefore the odds of this installation process to fail is super high and if it does, do this and that"... as it looks like so many folks all over the place are spinning cycles to see what is going on - all just to start docker after installation.

I've had this issue for a month. Previously, I would get the message when starting docker:

"Containers feature is not enabled. Do you want to enable it for Docker to be able to work properly? Your computer will restart automatically."

I would click no, docker would exit, then I would navigate to the docker root directory and run: DockerCli.exe -SwitchDaemon, which would allow me to start docker again and get it working. Now, whenever I start docker, it shuts down my MobyLinuxVM and then gives me that message.

What is the fix for this?

@sshankarn you said is right , docker for win is really odd, and the prompt messages for not running well varies from problem 1. to problem n. And it's really hard to find the way to solve exactly the same problem. And I found one solution to uninstall docker, turn off Hyper-V and reinstall docker, it failed too, and it still has this problem
