Merge 4.0.x into 4.1.x #721

In the branch 4.0.x a new feature regarding using a custom session container for authentication options has been introduced. This has not yet been merged in to the 4.1.x branch. Hence, this PR suggest to do such a merge.

Since the 4.1.1 release is currently broken anyways, see discussion in #720, I suggest releasing 4.1.2 from the 4.1.x branch right away.
