What to do with page notes #13

The note at the top ("Posted with the gracious permission of the Author") is associated with Page 1, but is not overlaid on it. We really treat these like "in between pages" notes.

When someone embeds a single page, does this note get displayed?

i think for a single page embed it'd be doable to include. I think if you can flip between pages... things become more complicated, an perhaps worth punting on... or maybe we add a slide up overlay at the bottom of the page that's dismissable. That way it literally is sort of a cover / preface to reading the page.

Those section identifiers make good sense in the context of overall document navigation, especially in the pop-up sidebar panel and on longish documents. On the current viewer, they also act as a nice typographical element for organizing the document's table of contents for storytelling. Would be good to replicate some of that in the mobile experience in whichever way lets readers quickly find the important pieces of a doc. Perhaps emphasizing a way to jump from note to note would help?

Specific to the single-page embed (and setting aside multi-page navigation), is the section between-page note's conceptual relationship to the page immediately following strong enough to warrant even showing it? That seems like a really fragile relationship. It's just as likely the note is introducing a series of pages, or providing insight in the context of the full document, as that it's providing information unique to that page. And in those cases where it does reference the next n set of pages, it could feel really weird to show the note on just a single.

My tendency is to launch without support for these notes on single-page embeds, and reserve them for the full document. If we hear from users about them, we'll know to change course.

I'm getting a little confused, because sections are a separate thing from page notes, and i just want to confirm that we're all still talking about page notes :)

@reefdog Agree. Section note is a superfluous item on single-page embeds.

Sorry @knowtheory, yes, I mean between-page notes. "Section notes" got left in during bad copy editing.
