Updates code to pass tests on windows, and to use the latest compose mixin API.

Now that we're probably not going to update everything to use the new compose API I think I'll actually just pull those out and make a new PR with the fixes for Windows. No sense merging a breaking change into master here if we're not going to do it downstream.
