As someone who signed up for google drive JUST TO SYNC TeX files, I can't over
emphasize how badly this is needed. I am force to use dropbox atm because it
allows for editing of TeX files even from a mobile device, but I would prefer
drive if google can get it together on this.

I totally agree this could be an awesome feature

Native support of LaTeX, along with Dropbox-like version control, would be a
major point of attraction for the academic and research communities. See
sharelatex.com and scribtex.com

This feature would definitely be needed, at least for .tex and .bib files which
are simple text files (using standard encoding) and probably already
readable/writable with the GD Editor.

I hope I can edit all text files in google drive.

I agree that google should get this fixed. They cater to academic institutes
with their email servers etc but can't include a usable interface to
collaborate on technical documents....c'mon. The drive is nice but it could be
so much better if they would work on extending their editor capabilities.
