Security Update 2018-001 Breaks Activation Tool? #434

Your Issue: Continuity "not supported" in System Information. It seems the "Security Update 2018-001" is preventing the tool from working.

Steps done to try to fix the issue: Tried re-patching, no change.

I have Macbook Pro 8,2 (Early 2011) and (I believe) the same replacement Airport card.
Running MacOS High Sierra 10.13.4 with all up to date patches.

Running Continuity Activation latest Beta.

My System Report Bluetooth shows:

Bluetooth Low Energy Supported: Yes Handoff Supported: Yes Instant Hot Spot Supported: Yes

Verified Instant Hotspot is working as expected using my iPhone and iPad.

So not seeing an issue on MBP Early 2011 (MacBook Pro 8,2)

@Sean Hoyt Drat! Just in the process of installing that security update as we speak (that was fast of you, dude!). And I’ve only just started enjoying full Handoff and Continuity in the past week, having finally plucked up the moxie and found the time to install my Wi-if extreme card (~4CAX) ordered and received late last year.

No big worries, because I’m dual booting both Sierra and High Sierra from different drives; Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and others work very well in Sierra (and High Sierra with the exception of Safari for some reason - appears in the dock but fails to open).

Will investigate further after the security update finishes.

Thanks for the heads-up; good stuff as usual!

👍🏽

@seanhoyt @airmanchairman

OK...double Drat! I did not realize the update just came out today. My bad. I guess I won't install it now that I know you had trouble. Trying to look to find what they changed...

@seanhoyt -- Can you say whether you disabled SIP when you reinstalled the Activation tool after the Apple patch?

@DOCSISMAN @seanhoyt https://github.com/seanhoyt Just logged in after the security update, and Handoff, AirDrop and Continuity are all no-no in System Report.

Will have to disable SIP and run CAT once more.

Feedback in a few...

I just did the update, rebooted. Kept SIP disabled and reinstalled the Activation tool. Reboot.

All is well.... Everything is "Yes" as in my first post above.

15in Macbook Pro 8,2 (Early 2011), 2.2GHz Quad-Core i7, 16MB RAM, 1TB SSD, w/CAX replacement Airport card.

(Now I just wish I could find an AC card that fits/works. Really don't see a good reason to replace this old dog MBP anytime soon... Seems the uCard isn't available anymore...I'm sorry I didn't get one when they were available....)

In any event, keeping SIP disabled and reinstalling the Activation tool appears to have worked for me...

@DOCSISMAN Good stuff!

Wasn’t aware there was an AC card available - I just love my trusty old 17” early 2011 8,3 core i7 MacBook Pro with 8mb RAM (may double that soon!).

Will do exactly the same and update...

Ok, I uninstalled the patch and reinstalled, seems like everything is back to normal. For the record, I leave SIP off (I know, I'm edgy), so there was no need to disable it.

airmanchairman commented 6 years ago

Same here, all good…

When all is fully tested and done I intend to re-enable SIP with kext disabled (“csrutil enable —without kext”)

I had just done that when I discovered the security update and applied it - I think it caused a kernel panic or similar, because as soon as the patch installed, it reported an unexpected reboot which I logged and reported to Apple.

Fun and games...
