[DO NOT MERGE] Add changes from Wendi's version #27

I put changes from Wendi into a separate branch so we can collectively review them on GitHub.

This PR may be edited before merging - I can do that if you will tell me what's needed.

Update: this PR is now superseded by PR #28. It has some useful comments, so I will keep it open while I need to rely on them for further work on #28.

How to inspect .mat file and which of the two versions to take? What is the meaning of such file?
