The pull request includes functionality to address #11 and related tests. Also, an updated .gitignore, and a bug fix to a previous pull request #14 which prevented the current fix from working correctly. Just checking whether the 'PARENT_REF' key exists was incorrect because 'PARENT_REF' is always available, and set to None by default.
