I was hoping @DanCheail and/or @fourseven might want to be on the panel for this one?
I'm more than happy to take part, just let me know when.
Pop over to #4 and help decide what topic to discuss.
I was wondering if @parndt, @hmaddocks or @halorgium might run this one and I'll opt out and just do the editing? That means setting up the hangout-on-air and making sure that I get given the YouTube URL to download the audio.
Hey. About time you guys came up with a topic, don't you think?
Hah fair call, I'm happy to talk about "how to fall into open source work"
Had just been talking about Ruby Tea Party in the last episode. That as well as the proposed show ideas (University: is it still a thing?, Programming: is getting started hard?) got me thinking @fourseven and Merrin talk about Ruby Tea Party, maybe bring in @joshuavial to talk about Dev Boot Camp, and @eoinkelly to talk about Code Yoga?
Happy to talk about dev academy
Happy to talk about Code Yoga
I think @fourseven is the show runner for this episode so I'll leave it up to him if he had another topic in mind but if not this one then there does sound like there is a show in there for another time. /cc @jamesotron
Like I mentioned on Skype @jamesotron I'm actually in Auckland that day, so could do an in-person recording if you do feel like being a part of the panel. Sounds like the proposed topics are in line with creating a community, part two.
@ootoovak so @fourseven isn't the show runner, unless he wants to be? Anyone is welcome to nominate themselves for the role.
@awagener would you be intereseted in being on this episode as well talking about http://iwanttolearnruby.com/
If so that the show would be talking about learning Ruby (University: is it still a thing?, Programming: is getting started hard?):
Keeping it to about 5 people for the show. How does that sound?
I'd certainly be interested. I'm not sure how much context I Want to Learn Ruby will bring (as it's a collection of ways to learn/improve Ruby rather than an actual 'way' I run myself) but it's certainly all topics I'm interested in.
I've got a very university oriented background - I basically learned to program at university (I'd dabbled briefly before, but couldn't really program at all), and then tutored for a few years, and did half of a PhD. However, if we were really interested in getting into the uni/other path thing, @parndt might also provide a middle ground, as he came through CPIT? This might be setting the net too wide for one show though.
I'll be in Colorado on the 13th NZ time, so it'll be the afternoon of the 12th for me. 11am NZ time is 3pm, so any time around then will work well.
This sounds like the makings of a great show. Might need to whittle down the scope a bit though.

Hi all, I guess the Code Yoga perspective is that of the "casual programmer" - most of the folks who come to it treat programming as a hobby and don't aspire to be full-time developers. This overlaps issues like getting over the initial hump i.e. getting ruby installed & running especially on Windows. As an aside, I wish the ruby community was a bit more game about helping those folks beyond telling them "Y'know you really should get a mac".
For those folks who don't know me, my background mostly self taught - wrote some terrible C at uni (electronic eng), perl, php after that & ruby for a little over one year now.
Yeah I agree, list above was mostly to give context to what each person's experience is in the Ruby teaching. I'm happy to sit this one out and just enjoy listening to the banter if @awagener and @parndt want to host? @jamesotron I presume you might just want to do editing on this one so you don't lose a whole Friday?
Yeah, I'm keen to skip this next one and pick up again at number 7.

Just a reminder that this episode is this Friday so we should get a decision on the episode content and potential questions pretty soon.
So it sounds like @fourseven will be dropping by my office for recording on Friday, which means that I'll probably be there too :)
@ootoovak can I assign this to you to organise and run? (and update the issue subject/description).
Can I please have a yea/nay from everyone who wants to be on this week's panel? We only have three empty spots ATM.
@parndt @DanCheail @awagener @hmaddocks @fourseven @ootoovak @shevaun @halorgium
CURSE YOU "CLOSE & COMMENT" BUTTON
Explicitly saying yea.
I'll be in the air. Keep up the good work!
For pingback, paging @mermop
Yea, I can be available for this.
I have confirmed with @eoinkelly and @mermop that they are both happy to join the show for 11am (Wellington time) this Friday. @joshuavial is a maybe as he might have to run off for a important meeting but it is a tentative yes for now. @jamesotron and @fourseven will be recording together form Auckland.
So that would be 6 people (including myself) already. That said my week has actually filled up quite rapidly with client work and I'm starting to worry about how much time I will have. @parndt would you be able to take over as show runner / panellist for this episode? If so that would be awesome and I'd be happy to continue to help out emailing, confirming, and thinking up topics if you would like.
@ootoovak I can step in, provided that you really do need to get out of it and it's not a nervous excuse. I'd rather you did it, it's rather fun.
If I do this one it will have been 3 shows in a row for me and I'm starting to feel too super famous.
@parndt have you ever done a show with 7 people? Does Hangouts die a horrible death after a certain threshold of people is reached? I'll email out everyone involved the show details tonight (including yourself) and then we can figure out final numbers and panellists/guests from there. Sound good?
By email out, do you mean post the show details here? I don't think Hangouts will suddenly die with 7 people, no.
No I meant email just to be sure everyone checked/got it but I'll cross post any show related non-intro things here. Think it is too late to change plans now so I'll take @jamesotron's advice and just make the call.
I'll stay on unless I really can't join then I'll let you @parndt or @jamesotron know and ether of you can take over as host. Otherwise we will go ahead with 7 people, 8 if @awagener is still interested?
Intro stuff will just be links to the great wiki pages James started already: https://github.com/dopodcast/dopodcast.github.io/wiki/So-you%27re-coming-on-the-show https://github.com/dopodcast/dopodcast.github.io/wiki/Mic-selection
Pretty sure they limit it to 10 participants, but 7 or 8 won't be a problem. Just that there's not much chance for everyone to have their say with that many people.
I'm still keen and available.
Will this be the last show for the year? Or is there going to be a recording on the 27th of December? (there should probably be a separate issue to discuss that sorry).
Last show of the year, I believe.
See #11

Ok @jamesotron, @fourseven, @parndt, @awagener, @eoinkelly, @mermop, @joshuavial you have all been confirmed for the show this Friday at 11am (Wellington time) see the description of this Github issue for more info.
For those of you that are new to this podcast check out these pages for some info and tips: https://github.com/dopodcast/dopodcast.github.io/wiki/So-you%27re-coming-on-the-show https://github.com/dopodcast/dopodcast.github.io/wiki/Mic-selection
And James has set up the show event page here FYI. If you have not been invited yet let me know: https://plus.google.com/events/ctq5qd0tdqip9hc7vnod42fhq48
As for the show topic, it would be great if any of you had topic suggestions around Teaching/Learning Ruby that you would like to cover in the show and let me know a head of time. I'll them put them in the show notes in the GIthub Issue above and we can refer to them during the show.
We are going to have a pretty full show this time with 8 people but should keep it active and entertaining. Mostly I think the panelists will just help keep the show moving along by asking questions of the guests but that is a fairly loose plan.
Talk to you soon! Sam
:+1:
@jamesotron, @fourseven, @parndt, @awagener, @eoinkelly, @mermop, @joshuavial reminder all we have the pre-show starting in less than a hour and show in an hour 10 or so. A quiet room, at least an iPhone mic, and headphones are good things to source now.
I'll message a link around for the Hangout when it is ready via Google Chat.
Such process. Much YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv5hn14J4PA
@parndt @awagener can you message me on G+ to get the Hangout URL?
I've gotten it from the kindly @jamesotron
Thank you @jamesotron
My pleasure, as usual.
