Assigned to @halorgium as the official gatekeeper of show ideas :)

gwagener commented 10 years ago

Starting in a few months I'd definitely be keen for updates on @parndt's experiences working while travelling.

parndt commented 10 years ago

Or even podcasting while travelling

gwagener commented 10 years ago

Freelance vs employment. You could try to get @malclocke on as someone who has done both and has chosen to go back to employment.

gwagener commented 10 years ago

Or you could get a business owner on to give that point of view on freelancers vs employees.

gwagener commented 10 years ago

About Railscamps... at Railscamp!

parndt commented 10 years ago

Can't broadcast live at Rails Camp but otherwise, yes.. that'd be nice.

gwagener commented 10 years ago

Don't do a live one that fortnight? The podcast will fall on Friday the 7th.

jimsynz commented 10 years ago

Yeah, that'd be awesome. I'm not going, of course :(

parndt commented 10 years ago

We can still include you through the wonder of the Internet :star:

Also, :(

jimsynz commented 10 years ago

Updated issue description with current list and copied suggestions from #5.

ghost commented 10 years ago

Two related topics. Probably needs to be soon to be 'topical'

jimsynz commented 10 years ago

@hmaddocks really? I'm not sure I want to go anywhere near that.

ghost commented 10 years ago

I guess that means Ruby and sexism is out of the question then.

jimsynz commented 10 years ago

No, not out of the question. Just needs to be carefully thought out so as not to make the problem worse.

jimsynz commented 10 years ago

I'd like to do a show on the intersection of mental illness and programmers. Perhaps involving @PrototypeAlex and perhaps someone from BlueHackers.org?

PrototypeAlex commented 10 years ago

I'd be more than happy to help out.

halorgium commented 10 years ago

@jamesotron @PrototypeAlex this interests me. especially with respect to how companies can help make sure their employees are made aware and not at risk.

jimsynz commented 10 years ago

Also, building APIs using roar/AMS/rabl. Which one? Why for? Perhaps with @apotonick ?

jimsynz commented 10 years ago

Related to mental health and programming: http://devpressed.com/ (a discourse instance for devs with mental illness).

halorgium commented 10 years ago

I'd be interested in hearing more from @georgebrock regarding http://georgebrock.github.io/talks/sleeping-with-the-enemy/

krasio commented 10 years ago

building APIs using roar/AMS/rabl

I'd be interested in that. We've been using rabl in my last project but finally had to switch to jbuilder.

PrototypeAlex commented 10 years ago

Nice find on the devpressed.com site @jamesotron

jimsynz commented 10 years ago

Do we want to talk to the folks behind RubyConf Philipines?

ghost commented 10 years ago

Depends what you want to talk to them about.

jimsynz commented 10 years ago

I'd like to talk to @joshk about Travis. Can I add you to the list Josh?

joshk commented 10 years ago

I am sure we can make that happen :)

jimsynz commented 10 years ago

@kelseymok has indicated that she'd be happy to be on a show about teaching ruby.

georgebrock commented 10 years ago

@halorgium Sorry for the very slow response here, but I'd be happy to talk about Django sometime.

eMBee commented 10 years ago

i am very interested in the "Freelance vs employment" topic and i'd like to potentially participate in that.

related to learning ruby, what about suitable apps for ruby beginners to get involved with? (apart from suggesting how to build your own site with rails)

another topic that i am not quite sure how to frame is, that i'd like to talk about the other languages you are using. which languages do you use besides ruby, and why? i wouldn't want this to turn into a plain language comparison though, or a "x is better than y", except maybe mentioning what you like about a particular language.

so basically just sharing everyones personal experience with the languages you have used, are using and also which languages you would like to took at in the future...

jimsynz commented 10 years ago

@eMBee I like this idea, although I'm aware it may be a false dichotomy. I'd like to talk more about types of work.

jimsynz commented 10 years ago

Note to confirm that @elight says he'd be happy to be involved in discussion about mental health. I'm keen to do this show early in the new year, but I'd really like to make sure that it's inclusive and useful. Do we know anyone who has actually studied mental health in IT/programmer populations? I'd love it if someone could learn us some data.

cc @PrototypeAlex

elight commented 10 years ago

Have you reached out to Greg Baugues?

Tips and tricks that've helped you with your career (I have a worklog, for example, that I record things into that I want to try and remember later, or track what I do throughout the day)

ghost commented 10 years ago

DCI

parndt commented 10 years ago

cc @saturnflyer

eMBee commented 10 years ago

@fourseven would you be up to participating in a show for that?

(i went through several phases of how i track my work and had some interesting insights along the way that i'd like to share)

saturnflyer commented 10 years ago

I'm game. How can I help?

jimsynz commented 10 years ago

I'm closing this issue, since I've opened new ones for each topic. Feel free to discuss them there.
