Backlight Control patch causes loss of display brightness control #162

Like a fool, I trusted Patch Updater. I don't even know what it updated (and I don't see a log anywhere), but after doing so I can no longer change the brightness of my screen on my 2011 17" MacBook Pro running 10.15.2, which is an absolute disaster as I NEED to be able to set this to the minimum setting often!

Already tried an SMC reset and firmware reset. I'm completely boned here!

As a LOVELY side-effect if I ever sleep the MacBook, it will wake from sleep with zero brightness. I know the display is otherwise working because I can shine an ultra-bright flashlight on it and see the screen (sorta). So I've lost sleep now, too. Awesome!

You can learn about what patches are installed and what they changed by examining the preference files that keep track of the installed updates and by looking at the source code. See #159 for more info.

Usually you can reinstall macOS on top of the existing OS to restore any files that were modified. Or you can try extracting the files from the macOS installers.

@ballo has been in contact with us and we have provided the support we can. It appears he has fixed his problem, if not please let us know.

We will be leaving this issue open to see if anyone else has this problem. It appears to be a minute chance of this happening depending on what guide you follow to disable the dGPU. We will be publishing a guide on how to reverse this issue if it happens to you in the near future. For the time being multiple users have reported success with the patch, enough where pulling it is unfeasible. There are other checks that can be added to limit it to just DeMux machines as intended, but it also works for those with a particular software disable use case.

I had the same problem after last patch update, but a full shutdown resolved my problem. No need for NVRAM and SMC restart. Brightness and sleep are functional again.

How did you fix the issue? I'm still facing both issues 1 - Brightness not working 2 - When the laptop goes to sleep, end up on a black screen

Also, this shows up whenever I restart the pc.. if I re-install the mac crashes and stops working, and I have to re-patch from USB, and still shows up after that.

Please help.

I don´t know exactly how, in my case, a shutdown resolved my problem, but I disabled automatic patch updates too. My mac is a macbook late 2011 15" with a disabled damaged dgpu.

sergioelisan commented 3 years ago

this is the tutorial i followed to disable my dgpu https://gist.github.com/cdleon/d1eff7246a25193304284ecec40445b0/

I got 2011 17", i already did until point 9, ill do the rest and let you know, thanks

ramizaher commented 3 years ago

unfortunately, it didn't work.. re-did it multiple times, but ended with a crash screen, so I had to re-patch from USB.. back to where I was now.. same issues and overwritten message poping up

anyone fix that without reinstall OS? I have same bug after update patch. Also macbook pro 2011 with broken discrete videocard, UMA only...
