actually in 2.5.1 this is the default. Once you click on a column it will change though
I don’t think so, sort is based on “title” in 2.5.1. Please refer to the below issue with comment as “changed sort order to 'title'”

Jason,
I have done some more analysis on this issue and I see that that the Content Ajax call to get the content is called twice. second call for the same content passes the sort order as “undefined”.
[N/A] [15/10/13 16:34:03:096 EDT] ERROR ajax.ContentletAjax [[ACTIVE] ExecuteThread: '3' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'] - Order by received from UI [modDate desc], Default Order By Used [modDate desc], Is Order By from UI SET true [N/A] [15/10/13 16:34:04:154 EDT] ERROR ajax.ContentletAjax [[ACTIVE] ExecuteThread: '3' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'] - Order by received from UI [undefined], Default Order By Used [modDate desc], Is Order By from UI SET true

Sorry, tested on the demo site and it works as expected. Issue only seems to with 2.5 installation. Please ignore my comments.
Thanks, Sreedhar

Content Editors in our team have requested sorting to be changed to "Last Edit Date", it currently sorts on the title now. Users frequently make corrections to the most recently added content elements.
Change Request -Change the content sorting done on "Last Edit Date" column on Content Search Screen (Search & Edit Content), the same change also applied for "Site Browser / File Browser" Tab (Files listing not the folders, folders can be alpha based)
Thanks, Sreedhar
