IMO I think a more subtle hover effect would be better. For example darken the background, lighten the text color or maybe just a less "instense" border color?
We're gonna have some problems with darkening the background since there really isn't much contrast between the "cards" and the background already. The alternative is to darken it more than the background, but that "looks weird".
With what we have today I think this is a good approach. Reducing the intensity of the border (color or thickness) could be an option though. Feel free to play around with it.
@duvholt mentioned that we should run through the page with UX/UD in mind, which might open up some more possibilities.
