Mapping an aggregate user-defined function (TimescaleDB first/last) #33844

I'm having issues mapping an aggregate user-defined function.

I want to use TimescaleDB first/last on my code and map it to TimescaleFirst() / TimescaleLast() (to avoid confusion with existing First() / Last())

I want to do something like this (using TimescaleDB documentation as example):

Context.Sensors
  .GroupBy(sensor => sensor.TimeColumn)
  .Select(group => group
                   .Select(sensor => sensor.Temperature)
                   .TimescaleFirst())

Which would produce:

SELECT first(temperature, time_column) FILTER(WHERE time_column IS NOT NULL) AS first_temperature,
FROM sensors
GROUP BY time_column;

I'm aware that for a working solution, the way we pass the arguments may differ, and also whether to define it as an extension method or not. It is just an idea.

I found no similar example, even using HasDbFunction or DbFunction attribute.

Here the function definitions from TimescaleDB (both return pg_catalog.anyelement):

Am noting that the above isn't a simple aggregate function: SELECT first(temperature, time_column) FILTER(WHERE time_column IS NOT NULL) seems like TimescaleDB-specific syntax that would likely require custom expression support, etc.

Opened https://github.com/npgsql/efcore.pg/issues/3186 on the EFCore.PG side to track looking into TimescaleDB support (though that's not something that's likely to happen anytime soon).

Opened npgsql/efcore.pg#3186 on the EFCore.PG side to track looking into TimescaleDB support (though that's not something that's likely to happen anytime soon).

Should I consider a new translator and reusing AggregatorExpression if I want to implement it? Or do you recommend another approach, such as mixing with FromSql?

@ftgo adding new SQL syntax/expressions is a really non-trivial thing, and generally quite difficult to do from outside the provider. I'd suggest doing what you can with FromSql first; if you really want to implement proper support for TimescaleDB syntax, I'd suggest looking at doing that within the provider itself (or ideally as an opt-in plugin, though some necessary hooks are probably missing).

After implementing with FromSql, now I am trying to implement a new translator and reuse PgFunctionExpression.

I am basing on the internals of EFCore.PG and other user examples, but now I am stuck because I have an error injecting IRelationalTypeMappingSource and ISqlExpressionFactory, no matter if I call AddEntityFrameworkNpgsql() or not.

I created the EFCoreAggregateExpression to share the example code.

@ftgo I'm unfortunately unlikely to find the time to dive into your code for this internal thing... But I'm not sure why you're reimplementing translation for stddev_samp when EF.Functions.StandardDeviationSample() already exists (docs). Can you provide context on that?

I decided to take some similar function as a starting point. Succeeding with it, I can dive on creating a new one.

Do you recommend creating a new issue at the EFCore.PG repository?

@ftgo I'm not sure, at this point we don't know of a PG-specific problem (or of an EF one either).

I'd concentrate on making your code sample simpler, even without using DI; your usage of Task.Run() seems very suspect here, and could cause bad race conditions.

I removed all async calls.

Note that I am calling AddMyStandardDeviationSampleSupportTranslator() which creates all classes and tries to use DI.
