Debugger does not stop on user-unhandled exceptions in async 'Task' methods #3558

Issue Description

breakpoint not hit on async task function

Steps to Reproduce

dotnet new react -n testx

in WeatherForecastController.cs replace

public IEnumerable<WeatherForecast> Get()

with

public async Task<IEnumerable<WeatherForecast>> Get()

and add a test exception throw ( see full repro here )

Expected Behavior

vscode breakpoint on exception

Actual Behavior

breakpoint not hit then reported only on DEBUG CONSOLE

Hi @devel0, what you are reporting is a general problem with exceptions from async Task methods. It is something has been on our backlog for a while to improve (and also the CLR team, who also needs to do work to make this scenario work). I will leave this issue open to track it.

The problem was a false positive because the method async hit correctly the breakpoint when an await is inside it.
