README is meant for inclusion in releases, not for compilation from Git.
autoreconf is not required with the releases and the documentation is also made 
available separately.

It would be nice to have these instructions in the source. It wasn't clear to 
me how to get this code to compile and it took a while to find the instructions 
on the wiki.

Maybe you could add a BUILDING file that has instruction on how to build from 
the source release and separate instructions on how to build from git?
