…but when we talk about the American dream, we never talk about what that dream costs. We never talk about how so many Americans are one financial crisis away from losing their savings or their homes. And we don’t talk about how the American dream should not be grounded in material things like large homes or fancy cars…

At our October meeting for the Seattle Review of Books book club, we talked about Noam Chomsky's Requiem for the American Dream. Someone asked if anyone else knew whether The Kids These Days even aspire to the American Dream, but then I remember offering that it sure seems like no one's ever interested in asking them about it, but we (society) are pretty good at punishing them for not seeking out the 1950's version of it (aka Chomsky's "Golden Age" 🙄)
