I think it would be a great help to the audience if we had an explanation in the documentation as to why we should invest into this, and why this is better than the original 'linguist'.

Sometimes you want this functionality in Python. https://github.com/douban/linguist/issues/31 would be a way to avoid the perception that this is different from the original 'linguist', making it clear that it is only an implementation in a different language and that the language definition work should be done in the original 'linguist' project.
