Dropdown selectors misrepresent deleted items #837

Several areas of the UI provide dropdown selectors which pick user-editable items/presets:

If these selectors are used to pick an item but that item is deleted, the dropdown selector does not indicate that it is referring to something which has been deleted. Instead, it seems to just display as though an adjacent item from the dropdown list is selected when it really isn't.

Here is an example where I deleted the original contact form "Second form" I had saved in the widget:

2018-02-05_15-37-22

This poses two usability problems for the user:

  1. The UI does not accurately convey the truth: the original selection is not picked anymore and the user needs to select another item.
  2. If there is only one remaining item to pick from (as in my example above) the user has no way to "select" that singular remaining item - the dropdown only seems to apply a selection if the dropdown selector value is changed which is impossible with only one item.

Proposing that we add a "choose one..." option at the top of all dropdown lists, always. And, that we default to this list item when the original selection was deleted from the design so the user is able to make a selection of a valid, remaining item.
